MONDAY MUSINGS: Can Beckett Return?

image

I don’t know why but I do not think May 16 will be the absolute end of Castle as we know it. I have no reason for optimism as I read all of the same articles and saw the same tweets. But deep down, I believe that Castle will have a rebirth is some form, possibly like Star Trek,l making movies or even 24 or X-Files getting a reboot, not to mention Gilmore Girls and Heroes.

With that said, two thoughts came to mind for my Monday musings. In moving picture history, there are very bad ways to deal with the Castle situation. Let’s discuss them:

1/. Replace the character with a different actor/actress.

There are three that come to mind fairly quickly. Now there were several minor characters replaced, Becky from Roseanne comes to mind as actors: Lecy Goranson (seasons 1-5 and 8), Sarah Chalke (seasons 6, 7, 8 as guest star,) shared the role. There are tons of examples like this but I don’t feel they apply since Beckett is virtually 1A to Castle’s 1. That example would be a better match if someone (like Brandy) replaced Tamala Jones.

There are three I am offering , one good, one bad and one funny. I will not use Bond 007 as that is a truly unique situation.

THE FUNNY
The funny one is from the movie The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor where Evelyn O’Connell was played by Maria Bello after Rachel Weitz starred in the first two. I say it is funny because the movie did not hide the fact this happened as the following dialog shows:

Mrs. O’Connell, is it true that the Scarlet O’ Kiefe character is based on you?
Evelyn O’Connell: No. I can honestly say she is a completely different person.
[… as the camera reveals her face to show that it is Maria Bello – not Rachel Weisz – playing the role]

It was a funny moment that took all the pressure off Maria and let everyone relax and enjoy the movie.

THE GOOD:
I bet everyone can guess this one. Back to the Future, how many had to go back to the first installment and double check on the actress playing Jennifer? I sure had to! Elizabeth Shue did look very similar to Claudia Wells and with the time delay between movies, not to mention the bigger part for Jennifer, the swap was almost seamless. It certainly did not cause the stir that the Mummy III did! It didn’t hurt that Ms. Shue is a popular and talented actress.

THE BAD:

There has never been a more blatant switcheroo than the swap of Darren Stevens in the hit TV show Bewitched starring Elisabeth Montgomery and initially Dick York. It was a simple sitcom with lots of physical comedy usually with Darren bearing the brunt if it. Unfortunately Mr. York had chronic back trouble forcing him to retire from the show. The Powers That Be decided on hiring Dick Sargent to be the new Darren. Nobody in charge seemed to care that they did not look alike, had different comedic styles and delivery. The audience never bought the change and the show’s rating plummeted and was cancelled two years later.

2/. Characters who left a show/movie franchise and returned at a later time.

Funny, but I never realized how often characters were of killed off on a show only to return with a lame explanation.

THE BAD:

Bobby Ewing from Dallas

Well how could one dispute that the worst dispatch and return of a character has to belong the the soap Dallas. I mean, how did they think that Bobby Ewing taking a shower and his death was all a horrible nightmare dreamed by his wife? Patrick Duffy decided to leave after season 8 only to to want to return after a one year hiatus.  The shower/nightmare scenario was the best they could come up with.  Viewers were not pleased and it reflected in the ratings

THE GOOD:

Sara Tancredi from Prison Break

The gripping and edgy FOX drama lost one of its biggest characters in the third season in a really gruesome way. “The Company” kidnaps doctor Sara Tancredi, played by Sarah Wayne Callies, and beheads her. The following season, it was revealed that the severed head, which was placed in a box, was a fake, and that Michael, the doctor’s love interest, never actually looked at the head to confirm that it was her. Subsequent interviews with the cast and producers revealed that Callies was pregnant at the time of her faux-death, and that the show couldn’t come up with an agreement to shoot around her maternity leave. So the producers just bumped her off.  Cooler heads prevailed and she returned.

PRISON BREAK: Dr. Sara Trancredi (Sarah Wayne Callies) in the PRISON BREAK episode "Riots, Drills and The Devil" airing Monday, Sept. 26 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX.

THE FUNNY:

This one is so lame it was funny. So Stone Cold Steve Austin, err sorry not the pro wrestler, saw his girl’s demise and not only got the producers to revive her but give her a spinoff show! Then she does not remember him!  And they never get back together!  The “Bionic Woman” technically died during the show’s second season. Jaime, played by Lindsay Wagner, gets engaged to Steve “The Six Million Dollar Man” Austin, played by Lee Majors. But during a skydiving trip, her parachute gets tangled and she almost dies in the fall. Austin convinces his boss Oscar Goldman, played by Richard Anderson, to give her a bionic operation to save her life, but her body rejects the implants and she dies in the very next episode. The show revived the character at the beginning of the third season by placing her in cryogenic state. However, her memories of Steve are lost due to brain damage, and she moves away to work on her recovery, which sets the stage for the character’s eponymous spinoff series.

So, history says that Beckett can come back and possibly likely will come back. I just hope story line is better that the drivel we have been served up in the past. Hey maybe Stana can star in a reboot of the 6 Billion Dollar Woman (taking inflation into consideration).
