MONDAY MUSINGS: PONDERING THESE THINGS
It’s the start of a new week so that means my mind shifts into randomness cocooned inside the marvelous world of CASTLE. So hand out with me as I share a six pack of arbitrary ideas.
In episode 6 of season 1, Meredith takes Alexis out of school to go shopping using the excuse of her grandfather having passed away. Alexis does not expose Meredith’s lie but does question her later. It seems One of Alexis’ grandfathers died six years ago, probably Meredith’s father since Castle doesn’t know who his biological father is, and it’s unlikely any of Martha’s husbands would have been ‘Grandad’ to Alexis.
Season 2 episode 13 Castle and Beckett chase the lead to an Irish bar on the west side, ergo the moniker of the group of WESTIES. The barmaid has info for the dynamic duo in which we finally get someone to call out Kate on her wild child phase.
MOLLY: Of course I knew Jack’s reputation. It’s part of what attracted me to him. What? You telling me you never had a thing for bad boys, Kate? BECKETT: No comment. Damn it woulda been interesting if Molly pried further, as least long enough for Castle to whittle a juicy nugget from her. Alas we has to wait nine more episodes for Madison Queller to drop the dime on K-Bex.
While we are on this installment, at the end, Castle comes in all contrite with a peace offering. He got sushi, got some Italian, got some Thai, even grabbed some hot dogs. What, no Chinese? Was Huongs closed? Really Castle was we taught you nothing? Kate + Food = Chinese, real simply math! In the end, Castle got his hot dogs he wanted ever since their first case. But did anyone else guess sushi for Beckett! And did anyone else think the Thai food came in a Chinese takeout container?
In POOF YOU’RE DEAD, Kate tells Rick that she came to Drake Magic Shop as a young child with her grandfather who was an amateur magician. Earlier in the life of the show Martha told us her family had a mind reading act at Coney Island. When they got Martha and Jim together for their big dinner as a couple, perhaps Rick could have used that as a conversation starter instead of them bickering over baseball. Just a thought.
Season 5 episode 3, SECRET’S SAFE WITH ME, Castle carries around two grand like chump change much to the marvel of Beckett. Yet her astonishment vanished when they appear to be losing the bidding war for the storage space. I thought it classic that she just volunteered Castle’s checkbook so they can get an extra $1600 from Big Percy. Only cost two grand and a character in Rick’s next book. How absolutely natural for Kate to just spend Rick’s money knowing he would not get a refund. A classic CASKETT moment!
Ok, now one for the road, in SECRET SANTA the plot revolves around a stolen heirloom clock and a Santa looking to redeem himself. During the theorizing of motives, Castle states “The clock was commissioned by a secret society to count down the end of days. A secret society of Santas, who are the guardians of time. Oh, that’s good.” What is so interesting is just a month after this episode aired ABC debuted a show starring Anthony Edwards called ZERO HOUR. The plot: Hank (Edwards) learns that one of his wife’s clocks contains a treasure map that may lead to something cataclysmic, and he must unlock its secrets while making sure it doesn’t fall into the wrong hands. Hank’s associates, Rachel and Arron, and FBI agent Becca Riley join him as he races against time to find his wife and save humanity. Sadly the show only lasted 13 episodes.
