8. CROSSFIRE. – SEASON 8
SEASON 1 – A DEATH IN THE FAMILY
Season’s one finale was the 10th of the short replacement season series. This I placed in spot number 5 but could rank as high as 3. I really loved this episode which has provided the full range of emotions from laughter to sorrow to angst. Although still in its infancy at this juncture, the plot line gave us plenty to yearn deeply for the next season to see where they would lead Beckett and Castle.
Castle certainly has two interesting dilemmas facing him here. One, he recruits a world renowned pathologist to examine the Joanna Beckett murder wounds on the down low. Then with that put into motion, he pesters Beckett about if she will reopen her mom’s case.
Not that that isn’t enough, his baby girl is growing up and invited to her first prom. Castle is facing the realities of raising a teenage girl who will fly the coop soon, much to soon for his liking.
Not to be outdone, Beckett stirs up some trepidation of her own upon herself. First she has to deal with the pissed off feelings for Castle as he blathers on over her mom’s case. Second, she has to settle her feelings for Mr. FBI, Will Sorenson as she must weigh the pro’s and con’s of asking him a HUGE favor and how it will affect both her professional like and more importantly, her personal life as Will has made it known he still harbors deep feelings for her.
Which leads to perhaps a top 5 funniest moment in Castle history as seen in the above screen caps.
MONTGOMERY: So where was she?
BECKETT: She was… in the hospital.
MONTGOMERY: Getting more surgery?
MONTGOMERY: What’s she got left to operate on?
BECKETT ( glances downward, looks very uncomfortable, and coughs.)
MONTGOMERY: Oh, no.
BECKETT: Oh, yes.
MONTGOMERY: Seriously? What could they possibly do down there?
BECKETT: Well, apparently, quite a lot.
And maybe the best Beckett face ever!
Beckett temporarily gets her way, i.e., Castle backs off somewhat and Sorenson came through with the mobster in witness protection. But Kate being Kate, it came tumbling down upon her. Sorenson got shot and well Castle just could not help himself.
In the end Castle lost to both his fears, as Alexis truly enjoyed her prom date, even indulging in a goodnight kiss while poor daddy sat in the shadows watching. No, she isn’t his adolescent girl anymore.
They catch the killer and Kate, giving into her guilt, visits and flirts with Sorenson. Sorenson, even in pain, makes a play for her. Castle appears once more to force Kate in a fork in the road. Sorenson sees Castle cares a lot for Kate. With hesitation, Beckett leaves Will’s side and goes to see what Castle wants.
Then, once Dr. Murray provided Castle with a real lead into Johanna Beckett’s murder he loses the battle with his conscience and must tell Kate what he has done and what he found. His reward? Castle, we’re over!!!
