EVEN MORE MUSINGS: The Villians – The Others

Lets take a look at the others who were Beckett’s arch nemesis.

Finally a true break in the Johanna Beckett case. The man behind the hired killer. Heck he even got Castle to pony up 100 large. And it is all a ruse. Beckett and Castle find out too late and Kate has to save Rick by killing Coonan

Wow, season two was a tough one on Kate. On the heels of the first Nikki Heat book, a crazed killer goes after Beckett in a battle of wits. This two parter is one of the greats in the lifespan of the show.

A squeeze from Castle’s past comes back to torment Caskett, hellbent on ruining the world, and in the process ruin Rick’s life.

Since Hal Lockwood could not deliver, the evil ones send good ole Cole toe finish the job, kicking Beckett’s pretty arse all over the rooftop until sending her sprawling over the side. Not only that, Maddox knew Montgomery enlisted Michael Smith to guard the files protecting Beckett’s life. But Smith was too clever and BOOM!

Jerry Tyson’s ( aka 3XK,) girlfriend and partner in crime. We had a foreshadowing of her existence way back in season three when Jerry alluded to changing his look to Castle. Then in season six we got an introduction to the plastic surgeon via lookalikes of Lanie and Espo. Finally tying up the loose ends for the ultimate escape, Dr. Kelly would reconstruct her face as Beckett’s disposing of the detective with Tysin extractingsoul killing revenge on Castle

Once again here is the poll to vote for the best bad guy/gal.

MONDAY MUSINGS: CASTLE – The Villians – Vulcan Simmons

I saw episode 13 of season 3 and thought about all the great villians  that have graced the show.  I plan to feature each one then sort out the best.  First is the larger than life Vulcan Simmons who appeared in three episodes.

What a badass, eh?  Boy did Vulcan get under Beckett’s skin, especially talking about her mother.  The only reason Vulcan was even there was that Gary McAllister offered him up as a decoy.  But man did Simmons ever push her buttons.  He was tremendous here, so imposing so dangerous, a formidable foe for sure!

A truly great episode.  Once again, that semester in Russia came in handy as Kate goes undercover as a Muskovite drug runner for the FBI.  Things go south in a hurry and her demand to see Lazerous is granted only for her cover to be blown when Vulcan Simmons recognizes her.  Awesome torture scene commences before she is sent to her presumed death only to be rescued by the real Russian!

Well, well, Bracken had enough of Beckett and now it was time for her demise.  Playing on her rage for justice and her undaunted pursuit of Vulcan Simmons, Bracken set her up for murder.  Still Vulcan was awesome here, absolutely loved his quote “you do have. warrent, don’t you?”  His smugness, arrogance and outright dismissal of her just made the scene better.   Poor Beckett, right after this she is framed!

Will be back soon with another worthy villian.  Until then, please take time to participate in the poll below:

Esposito top 10

These are my entries of the ten most bad ass moments in the career (that we have seen) of Javier Esposito.  Just my opinion, your opinion matters too. Drop me a comment!

Just missed… Tone Death…Season 8 episode 9

imageA Capella throw down.  Great scene where Esposito put his pipes to the test in order to interrogate a suspect.

Honorable mention. That 70’s Show…Season 6. Episode 20image

How about that 70’s getup.  Espo and Ryan recreate the old dynamic duo Snookie Watts and Ray Price.  My favorite scene was when Espo tried to do the patented slide across the hood and failed miserably.

Number 10 Season 4 Episode 21 Headhunter / Season 8 episode 6 Cool Boys

imageStared down the big bad Slaughter. In the first episode Espo trails  Slaughter to the Mexican gang where Castle was in danger.  Totally put the smackdown on the renegade.  This  season, being a badass by arresting Slaughter who is tied into a murder

Number 9 … Under The Influence. Season 5 Episode 11

Espo bonds with a young thief and goes toe to toe with the thug who controls him. Espo also shows a different side as he take a real interest in the kid and shows his paternal instincts.

Number 8… Live and Die in LA..To Live And Die In LA

imageSeverely interrogates suspect for Beckett.  Espo tracks down Don Mannis and shoots him.  As luck would have it, Beckett calls the number  that happens to be Mannis which Espo answers.  Espo to Mannis:

It’s over, Mannis. You give us the meet location and I’ll tell the DA in LA that you cooperated. The Esposito  sticks his gun into the wound in MANNIS’ shoulder and he cries out in pain. ESPOSITO turns the phone in MANNIS’ direction.  Also historical that Ryan could not remember 9-1-1. If I find the interrogation photo I will insert here but this one will do until then

Number 7…Kill Switch..Season 7 episode 8

Espo and transit cop save subway full of passengers.  When Esposito tries to talk to Jared on a subway car, he pulls the emergency stop on the car, takes a gun off of a transit police officer and then reveals that he has a bomb strapped to his chest. He holds the subway car and all of its passengers hostage.  Espo saves the day!

Number 6… Always..Season 4 episode 23 / After The Storm,, Season 5,episode 1..

image Follows Kate into hell, no matter what.  But I marked out for his question “done what 4 years ago?”

Number 5…Knockdown..Season 3 episode 13

Hal Lockwood got the drop on he and Ryan and were being water tortured. Never broke. Never in doubt

Number 4…A Deadly Game..Season 2 episode 24

image Stood up to Beckett unlike any other man has dared.   The Quote:
“You sure about that? Why do you think he’s been following you around all this time? What, research? The guy’s done enough research to write 50 books. Look, whatever the reason is, I’m pretty sure it doesn’t include watching you be with another guy.”

Number 3…Reckoning. Season  7 Episode 15

image Once again, Espo’s sharpshooting skills are evident as he takes out 3XK

Castle is beside himself over Kate missing until Capt. Gates gets his mind right.  While Rick is getting in 3XK’s head, Espo take the shot to finally eliminate Jerry Tyson

Number 2A …  HEARTBREAKER … Season 8 Episode 16

image image

In maybe the best Esposito themed episode of the series, an old flame who happens to be a convict comes back to assist with an investigation.  Javi swears up and down he is over her, yes huright!  Anyway he gets played and the bad guys get the drop on him, but in the end, Javi’s special forces training and sweet talking save him and get the bad guys!

Number 2… XY ..Season 8 Episode 2

image Here the one assassin tries to escape from the precinct and Espo sliding Die Hard style guns her down.  It was her watershed moment leaving Espo no choice.

Number 1…Kill Shot. Season 4 Episode 9

image So many great things in this one. Having the balls to stand up to Beckett talking her thru her PTSD and then shooting the suspect who had her dead to right.

Caskett. Beckett

MONDAY MUSINGS: Episodes Ruined

This installment of Monday Musings I will delve into several season eight episodes that contained a scene or two that hurt the overall greatness of that installment. These were among the best of the season but the show runners and thus the writers included one (or more) interaction that just made me shake my head, roll my eyes and yell at the TV screen. So let the debate begin :

We never did get a classic coffee at a  crime scene in season 8.

Episode 2

A certain no brainer. We get the assassins arrested and Kate allowed to bask in her glory being the new captain. Castle was so proud of his Kate. The precinct cheered her on. She was on top of her world. Then Rita steps out of the shadows and deals Kate a crushing blow. Why they would have Kate question everything she fought so hard to put behind her, Braken, her mom’s murder, the PTDS, fighting for the love of her life, mostly against herself just to toss it away on a conspiracy theory. Not to mention these characters were new (including Vikram) to her and therefore no trust had been established. But the writers decided that Kate should toss seven years away for a brief encounter with a CIA operative and a low level FBI analyst. This after all the hell they were through, just check out all the season finales leading into season 8. I just believe that Marlowe-Miller would have them fighting LokSat together and make it captivating

Episode 8

We finally got the needed confrontation between Castle and Beckett over their separation and her blind chase of LokSat. They were actually making progress in their relationship, having actually enjoyed investigating a crime scene together.  But that only lead to dueling hackers and the nuking of Castle’s system and possibly the marriage.  That lead to their verbal brawl in the captain’s office, Kate decided to return to Castle albeit in secret. The fans cheered! But the Castle says he had to punish her! WTF (why the face?). Really? Both have been through hell already this season but Rick says that? Even kidding? Then the geniuses have Kate reply “naked punishment?” Up to the ending I thought this was a very good episode that built on the Last Seduction

but no, the writers and show runners equating sex with romance and passion destroyed what should have been a terrific ending to send us into Christmas.  The ending could have been handled so much better.

Episode 15

This was promoted as the ultimate Kate episode. She goes back to her roots at the academy where she was a superstar to investigate a murder. Here we see Kate in all her police ass kicking glory. I was great to see her utilize all we come to know her for in the previous seasons. But yet, somehow, Kate had to endure some embarrassing moments early, having to crawl away from Martha while being in the loft in secret in what looked more demeaning than I a college walk of shame at a frat house. Then when Castle fesses up about knowing about LokSat, her big scene is telling Castle she to “process” it. Then sneaking back to the loft the same way she got out, her “processing” took the form of Irish intervention. Brilliant! Especially when she continues to wear the watch of her father symbolizing the life she saved from alcoholism”. So what do we get, a hard drinking Kate who needs scotch to make her peace with her husband. Then she contemplates leaving him? Again? Instead of a great episode featuring a heroine Kate, a mentor Kate, a role model Kate, TPTB (The Powers That Be) could not let her have that. They had to puncuate character flaws that were not there and should never be there.

Episode 9

Coming off a longer than normal winter hiatus, the opening has Kate and Castle enjoying a special lunch. Intertwined with many sexual innuendos and the requisite LokSat mention, Kate promises to let Castle in when the time is right. Yep, made no sense to me either. How Vikram is an insider to Kate secret world but her husband is kept in the dark, yup, kinda makes the previous seasons worthless when they shared clandestine murder boards and theories. But the real reason this makes my list is their public personas. It was bad enough that they had Beckett publically yell and slap Castle, but when RyEspo challenge the reason for the breakup, they believe he is cheating on their Captain. Castle adored Kate and once committed to her, was incapable of cheating on his beloved Beckett. How could RyEspo even think he could betray her after watching him try to win her back all season.  I think it hit a little too close to home for Castle, or at least it should have.  After all, Meredith cheated on Castle soon after Alexis was born resulting with Castle being a single father at a very young age. It was tasteless when they teased Beckett cheating on Castle in season 5 with Eric Vaughn and they were only dating! But to have Beckett allowing everyone think he was a cheater was a stab to her personal character which up to season eight was impeccable. The the cherry on top (and not in a hood way) was Beckett cavalierly announcing she was going on a hot date too. So unlike Kate who is loyal to a fault especially when it came to Castle.

THROWBACK THURSDAY: Beckett Broken-hearted – TOP TEN

Finally it’s the top ten heartbreaking moments of Kate Beckett. Geez, she has been through a lot!  Let’s see if you agree with me then ?

S6.E14. Modeling wedding dress but mom not able to share the moment

CASTLE - "Dressed To Kill" - When the assistant to Modern Fashion Magazine's dictatorial editor Matilda King (guest star Franes fisher) is found murdered, Castle and Beckett are thrust into the glitzy, ruthless world of high fashion in their search for the killer. Meanwhile Beckett's history in the modelling world gets her access to a very special wedding surprise, on "Castle," MONDAY, JANUARY 27 (10:01-11:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network. (ABC/Richard Cartwright) STANA KATIC

The the case takes Kate back to an old work place where she did some modeling as a 19 year old.  The same editor in chief, Matilda King, is still in charge of the most popular magazine Modern Fashon and the one whose clutches Kate escaped from.  One thing leads to another and Matilda gets Kate to model a wedding dress.  At the same time she is admiring herself in the mirror, Rick calls saying the can get a booking at their reception hall of choice but Kate hesitates and they lose the date.  Kate just could not get past the sorrow of her mom not being there for her big day.

S2.E13. Had to kill Coonan to save Castle

CASTLE - "Sucker Punch" - While investigating the death of an Irish mobster, Beckett and Castle uncover a local turf war that may be connected to both a late-night infomercial guru and an international drug smuggling operation. But the case turns agonizingly personal when evidence emerges that the killer they're chasing may have had a hand in Beckett's mother's murder, on "Castle," MONDAY, JANUARY 18 (10:00-11:00 p.m., ET) on ABC. (Photo by Michael Desmond/ABC via Getty Images) JAY R. FERGUSON, NATHAN FILLION, STANA KATIC

Finally tracking down her mother’s killer to being someone named Rathbun, Castle ponies up 100 Large to catch him, just to realize the killer was Dick Coonan after all.  Seeing his impending doom, Coonan grabs Castle and slowly drags him to the elevator.  Kate got a small opening and shot Coonan, then tried doggedly to revive him before he passed away.

S6.E2. Castle slowly dying from poison

So Kate is now FBI and trying to maintain a distance relationship with her fiancé.  Except her bethrowed is virtually a nine year old on a sugar rush so of course he HAD to go to DC and HAD to poke his nose into a federal case and HAD to be exposed to a deadly toxin.  Now Kate and Rachel need to find the bad guys and get an antidote.  Good thing for Castle that Kate is REALLY smart and knew the difference between an antidote and an anecdote.  Otherwise he would be slowly dying while she told him humorous stories

S5 E24 and S6.E1. Thinking Castle was going to break up with her

At at the end of season 5, the Caskett relationship was rudderless as Kate was super tempted by Eric Vaughn who she was serving as a body guard.  They had a terrific moment of Love in STILL just for Castle to flounder to the question of relationship status then Kate interviewing and  offered the FBI  job without consulting Castle.  When Castle said we have to talk, Kate expected the worst fearing she would lose Rick forever.

S3.E3. Mike Royce breaks her heart

In season three we get a glimpse of some of Beckett’s backstory.  Mike Royce was her first partner and possibly the first man she truly loved.  He understood her passion, her drive her obsession in solving her mom’s murder.  Which made his betrayal all the more painful to Kate as she had to bring him to justice.

S3.E24. Montgomery killed for her

Hal Lockwood escapes putting a huge target on Beckett.  beckett and Castle get real close to finding out the truth when Espo and Ryan find out Montgomery was the third cop. Montgomery begs Castle to get Beckett to back off. Then  Lockwood gives Roy an ultimatum but The Caltaun had other ideas, leading Kate to the airstrip for the ultimate showdown.

S4.E23. Kicks Castle out for withholding a lead.

They just made made great progress as a couple in the previous episode.  Kate gets a lead on Cole Maddox who plans to kill both Kate and Mr. Smith.  Smith contacts Castle again imploring him to settle down Beckett and walk away from this.  As he begs her, he tells her about Smith and that us when she loses it and possibly Castle and she allows him to walk through the door and out of her apartment.

S6.E23. Castle run off side of road… Car in flames

Now I know I am in the minority here by saying I love this episode.  I thought the interplay of Kate being already married and all the fun getting her divorce from Rogan  was excellent.  And being Castle, the wedding could not come off easy so the cliffhanger ending was appropose.  But it was truly heart wrenching for the bride to go from the most happy place in the world to sheer hell.

S2.E24. Breaks up with Demming then left hanging by Castle

CASTLE - "A Deadly Game" - Nothing is as it seems when Castle and Beckett investigate what appears to be the assassination of an intelligence operative. Meanwhile, Beckett's romance with Demming threatens her relationship with Castle, forcing them to confront their feelings for each other, on the Season Finale of "Castle," MONDAY, MAY 17 (10:00-11:00 p.m., ET) on ABC. (Photo by Michael Desmond/ABC via Getty Images) STANA KATIC, MONET MAZUR, NATHAN FILLION

Oh man, this scene got me.  I was heartbroken for Kate.  To come so far (with a reality che k from Espo) as to know she wants to give a relationship with Castle a try.  Demming gets dumped in the process all for not being Rick!  Kate summons up her courage to confront Castle with the suggestion they get together when she takes her first shot to the heart, Castle shows up with Gina, thinking Kate was going away with Tom.  I felt so bad for Beckett, she seemed crushed like she lost her first true love

S5.E21. Making her peace with death, Castle and her dad

CASTLE - "Still" - Beckett's life is on the line when she steps on a pressure sensitive bomb. While the team searches for a way to disarm the explosive, Castle distracts Beckett by arguing with her about who fell for whom first , on "Castle," MONDAY, APRIL 22 (10:01-11:00 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network. (ABC/Richard Foreman) ALLAN LOUIS, STANA KATIC

How does one make her peace with impending death?  Well the help of her boyfriend took some of the sting out until it became doomsday.  Kate tries to be strong, sending Castle away and calling her dad.  I wonder if she was just as grateful that she got voicemail for Jim.  Her goodbyes complete, she steels herself for her destiny.

So that is it, please send me your comments, Bronx cheers, suggestions!

Tomorrow is a new installment of Flashback Friday (or is it Friday Flashback?)

I have two summer projects I have kicked off. First is to review the 151 episodes I have not done yet (luckily they are all the good ones (mostly) ?  Second, I am re-writing season 8 so I can properly write season 9!

Details for the rules coming soon.  First episode re-write is targeted for next Tuesday.

Last note, if you have a topic you would like to see blogged about, please put it in the comments block!  I would love fresh idea!

XY. Castle season 8 episode 2

Beckett receives a tip and ends up launched into a fight for her life with mercenaries on her trail. Castle tries to figure out why his wife is on the run.

The Good:

-Kate being pissed at Vikram for screwing up her first day as Captai

– Kate being impaired by her gunshot wound

– How quickly Kate could change from smiling to serious when leaving the loft.

– Kate stitched herself up with a Vodka anesthetic.

– Kate got under Bracken’s tough demeanor

– Rick agitated that she is not in touch and this has hit a nerve with him

– Rick begins to understand that Beckett is going down the rabbit hole again.

– Rita tells it like it is to Beckett about what will happen if she keeps going

– Kate going from agonizing over leaving Castle to being a hardened ass kicking hunter ( aka Geena Davis in a Long Kiss Goodnight)

The Bad:

– Alexis the bad guy slayer!

– Beckett says no more secrets which does not last

– For someone who dragged Beckett into all this, Vikrum sure hesitates to do stuff to help with the case

-Vikrum at the Hyde murder scene, really?

The WTF:

-Rita to the Rescue!  Beckett’s step mother in law

-Alexis the computer guru/hacker

– Kate shows no sign of injury at Rita’s house

– at the airplane hanger, Vikram, who claimed to be just a computer guy, sure snapped that piece to ready mode effortlessly

– Interesting that Vikrum was who decodes the phone and incriminate Alison Hyde.

– Beckett is willing to leave Rick to McCord et al, even though she was with them 3 episodes.

– Kate can make that kind of life altering decision that fast/

TRIVIA/Stuff only I care about:

– No sniper bullet wound on Kate when she takes off her shirt

– Also no mom wedding ring on a chain.

– But is wearing dad’s watch!

– Beckett always has cross precinct and state jurisdiction

Richard Castle: You know, before Bracken was killed, he told me you’d never be happy just being my wife. Please do not tell me that son of a bitch knew you better than I do

Kate Beckett: So, what are you? CIA?
Rita: Oh, god no. I’m a different three-letter agency. Much more exclusive.
Kate Beckett: You actually expect me to believe that?
Rita: I did save your life, dear.
Vikram Singh: True, that.
Kate Beckett: How did you end up back there? What’s your connection to all of this?
Rita: I’m afraid that’s also classified.
Kate Beckett: People died. Friends of mine.
Rita: I know. And more may die unless you tell me everything that has happened up until this point. Listen to me. Whatever you think this is, it’s bigger. And if you want to stay alive, you’re gonna need my help.
Kate Beckett: It started this morning. I was getting ready for work, and then he called.

Rita: I’ve been married to Castle’s father for almost ten years.
Kate Beckett: Jackson never mentioned being married.
Rita: Well, of course not. It’s classified. In this line of work, you make a lot of enemies. Attachments are liabilities, leverage to be used against us.
Vikram Singh: [sarcastic] Sounds romantic.
Rita: It can be. Absence doesn’t always make the heart grow fonder, but it sure does wonders for the libido. I haven’t seen Jackson in… nine months? I am raring to go.
Vikram Singh: [still sarcastic] That’s sweet.

Senator William Bracken: Detective Beckett, you are the last person I expected to see.
Kate Beckett: Why is that? You thought I’d be dead by now?
Senator William Bracken: I don’t have the slightest idea what you’re talking about.

Vikram Singh: You are gonna get me shot.
Kate Beckett: Look on the bright side: chicks dig scars.
Vikram Singh: I hate you

Allison Hyde: Are you currently in contact with Captain Beckett?
Richard Castle: No.
Allison Hyde: But she did rescue you last night.
Richard Castle: Yes. And then she left me, so it’s kind of a sore subject.

Richard Castle: Beckett, this is Hayley. She’s the one who helped me find you.
Kate Beckett: Thank you for taking care of him
Hayley Vargas: Yeah, it’s a lot of work. I don’t know how you do it.

This was a very Kate-centric episode which is always welcome.  This is one of the most exciting episodes for the first 40 minutes the somewhat rushed over the last three.  The magnitude of all this is far more than we have ever seen Beckett and Castle endure previously.  After a couple of seasons of soft lovable Beckett, we get the ass-kicking Kate.

I know a lot of folks are pissed over the ending of this episode.  I know it really tugged at my heartstrings when Kate left at the end.  But I am willing to believe that Kate really thought she was protecting Castle since so many came after her and that she was shot once again.  Sure Castle has come along way in becoming better at handling himself but this was way out of his league.

I greatly liked this episode and hope that they do great episodes with this separation.

Despite the show being  named Castle, this show is Beckett’s story; it has been since the very first episode. It’s logical that having borne the burden of her mother’s murder for 17 years, that she would want to see all those responsible getting the justice they deserve. It always seems that when she finds some moniker of happiness, those behind her mom’s murder would screw with her like in this case. It’s also logical, though jarring, that she separate herself from Castle to try and keep him safe. He has shown he can take care of himself, but this situation is different. He is no cop and as Alexis aptly stated, not trained as one. They came at Beckett with 10 people this time and killed 5 along the way. Then 10 more! They are very dangerous.

Whether Beckett can be happy just being Castle’s wife remains to be seen. We can only hope, in the end, I would bet on a happy series ending.  But she didn’t do Castle any favors by not confirming this to him before she left.  I have grown into a big Stana Katic fan. Ms. Katic is simply an amazing actress. The last two scenes of this episode should prove that to any doubters still out there.

XX. Castle season 8 episode 1

A call from a mysterious stranger ignites an explosive chain of events; the story is told from Castle’s perspective as he searches for Beckett.

The Good:

-Nice tender touch as Castle presents Beckett with the cupcake enclosed engraved diamond bracelet.  Also nice that it provided the first plot twist

– how easily it was for Beckett to lie about going to 1PP

– Nice connecting Hayley counterfeit ID scam to the gunmen attacking Beckett

-Knife,gun,Kevlar nicely done (Rochenbeau revisited)

-great appearance by Bracken, really spun a tale of serious doubt for Castle about Kate.  Even imprisoned, kept his political demeanor

-Castle tortured by spiders, nice touch playing off his phobias

-Also once again showing what happens when a Castle loved one is in danger

-Beckett to the rescue!

– The notion that there are multiple teams after Beckett not  just the first 5

– It was the right call having female assassin go down in a blaze if glory instead of being a rat.

– The fleet of black Suburban’s rolling up to the hideaway as the show ends.

The Bad:

-Alexis Castle P.I.? Really?

-While we’re suspending our disbelief, the medic rolled so easily when challenged by Alexis, again really?

-Hayley leaving Castle alone at the prison

-LT got disarmed way too easy.

-Missed Beckett

-Hardly  any Lanie and no Martha

– first scene of the new season starts with a lie

-Vicram as a low level CIA analyst has the ability issue this alert?

-Espo calling Gates on Kate’s first day as Captain?

-Sliding,firing Espo!

-Hayley giving flirting tips to Alexis knowing the grave danger Beckett was in.

-Taking the FBI a long time to take over/join the investigation.  Lesser cases in the past got their involvement quicker

Trivia/Stuff that only I may care about:

– the 9mm bullets are consistent with a Glock 19 that Beckett carries

– Beckett loses her bracelet, will she get it back?

– Always appreciate references to past episodes.  Rick’s phobias and hellbent side were well appreciated.

-Great seeing badass Beckett again.

-the hidden door opens via an Edgar Allen Poe book

-Clara Stryker aka Sophia Turner name used by Alexis, nicely played

– IMDB has Hayley’s last name listed as Vargas for this episode.

Kate Beckett: [behind his back, Castle holds something that is smoking] Babe, did you set your hair on fire again?
Richard Castle: That was one time. And no. No, no. I’m just, uh, so good-looking, I’m literally smoking hot.

Richard Castle: [Beckett is preparing for her first day as Captain of the precinct] Your first day. How you feeling?
Kate Beckett: Um… exhilarated and frightened and everything in between. I wish that you were coming with.
Richard Castle: Oh, sweetie, we talked about this. What am I gonna do? Sit outside your office and fetch you coffee?
Kate Beckett: Yeah, you’re great at fetching. I’ve trained you well.

Kate Beckett: [Castle puts her “Always” bracelet on her wrist] Wow. I love this. I’m gonna cherish this.

Richard Castle: [picking up phone] What’s so funny?
Senator William Bracken: You. You come in here all on fire about your wife. You don’t even know who she *is*… sixteen years Kate Beckett’s been obsessed with solving her mother’s murder. You really think she can turn off that kind of obsession?
Richard Castle: Are you saying this is *her* fault?
Senator William Bracken: I’m saying she’s never gonna be happy just being Mrs. Castle. She needs to tilt at windmills. It’s in her DNA, like a moth to the flame. And we all know what happens to the moth in the end.
[hangs up phone]

Assassin: Keep walking. Head for the blue van.
Richard Castle: Oh, just the person I was looking for.
Assassin: You know, most people react differently to a gun in their side.
Richard Castle: Yeah, well, this sort of thing happens to me a lot.

Assassin: You can quit faking. The dose I gave you wore off by now.
Richard Castle: Well, you can’t blame a guy for trying.
Assassin: You might want to try something a little more original than the trick Derrick Storm pulled in “Storm Fall”.
Richard Castle: You read my books?
Assassin: Lot of downtime in my line of work. Your earlier stuff was better. You got soft once you met the skirt.
Richard Castle: Everyone’s a critic.

Richard Castle: Don’t be so sure. Your team started out with five. Three of you are dead, and you’re sitting right here. That leaves one: your boss. And Beckett against one guy? I like those odds.
Assassin: What makes you think there’s only one team in play?

A call from a mysterious stranger ignites an explosive chain of events; the story is told from Castle’s perspective as he searches for Beckett. With season 7 having a clean end, unlike the previous seasons where there was carryover storylines, getting a action packed first episode was essential.  More impressive is they did it with Stana missing the first week of filming.  After some disappointing season 7 episodes, this one may have been the most intense since season 6 “Belly of the Beast” or “Veritas”.  Once again a Bowman directed episode was worth it.  Seeing the story from Kate’s POV next will be interesting
